Stuck on a bus? Maybe you’re waiting at the dentist? Don’t waste that valuable time! Just do what I do. Instead of being bored turn this downtime into a guitar practice session. It’s easy if you remember these three methods for learning guitar without a guitar: Sight reading, theory study, and music appreciation. In this article I will examine each of them. If you truly have that burning desire to improve, I’m sure you’ll find yourself using them all the time.
As guitarist we are very tied to our physical instrument. But, there is much we can do without it. The first stategy is sight-reading. Sight-reading is perhaps the easiest to prepare for and the hardest to actually accomplish. It simply requires a copy of the sheet music or tablature (I like it when both are on the sheet) and a few moment s to sit and go over the music. My goal when I sight-read is to not only read the notes but also to hear them and feel them under my fingers. When sight reading, I want to truly play the music in my imagination
Next, if you cannot play you can always work on your intellectual knowledge. Yes, I know, the dreaded theory. It is a simple truth that a firm understanding of how modes, scales, chords, and all the relationships of music fit together will aid you in your improvisation and subsequent mastery of the instrument. I try to carry a printout from my favorite software program or website so I’m always prepared. Use available time to study and review so that your knowledge of the guitar will grow to be complete and totally your own.
My final, maybe even favorite, technique of working on my guitar playing when I can’t play is to listen to as much music as I can. I listen to the old masters of blues Big Bill Broonsey and Blind Boy Fuller. I listen to the modern masters like Stevie Ray Vaughn or Roy Bookbinder. But I don’t stop with music in my own style, I listen to everything; Jazz, Baroque, Indie, and folk Rock. All music will increase your musical vocabulary and ultimately bring you to where you most want to be…the world of the Musician.
So now you see that time away from the guitar can be time well spent. You can read music to increase your appreciation of a certain piece. You can study the relationships within the music and grow in understanding. And you can listen to a great variety of music and grow in appreciation. What all these have in common is they build the attributes of the master musician.
